At Home Remedies for Nasal Congestion with Nasal Irrigation

Every person has his or her own basic hygiene practices which involve several steps and procedures that would ensure the cleanliness and well-being of one’s entire body. From top to bottom, individuals make sure they scrub, rub, wash and brush different areas of the body to give cleanliness and healthiness a whole new meaning. But what about the nasal area? A lot of people who are suffering from nasal congestion and chronic sinusitis, and they have realized that no matter how clean they keep themselves and their surroundings, their nasty condition just keeps coming back. And because of this, one needs to make sure that they perform a thorough nasal wash.

Performing a nasal wash is a very important task which should be part and parcel of anyone suffering from rhinitis and other forms of nasal congestion’s daily routine. Whether you have allergic rhinitis, asthma that is caused by allergens and other types of lung problems, you will need to cleanse your nasal area to relieve yourself of the symptoms. Draining out your nose and your sinuses will help relieve you and prevent rhinitis and asthma a lot worse, especially during the night. Performing a nasal irrigation or a salt water wash will help you do this. It can clean the mucus from your nose, which will make your other medication work a lot more effectively. It can clean out the allergens and the irritants from your nose and thus reduce the impact. It can help remove the bacteria and the viruses that are in your nose and thereby reduce the frequency of the infection. Additionally, it can also help decrease the swelling in your nose and also increase air flow.

The first step you need to do when it comes to the proper nasal wash or nasal irrigation technique is to wash your hands and make sure you keep it clean and keep it free from dirt and other allergens which may get in the solution. When you make the nasal wash solution, you put together salt water solution or saline solution in a clean glass. To this, you will need to mix one half of a teaspoon of uniodized salt (also known as sea salt) in roughly about eight ounce glass filled with warm water. Using uniodized salt is non-irritating. Also add a pinch of baking soda, enough that could fit in between your two fingers. Should you be seriously congested, try to use the entire eight ounces of the saltwater solution during the entire nasal wash procedure – if not, then around half of it or four to five ounces will do.  You should remember to discard the unused salt water solution and always try to prepare a new solution every time you perform the nasal irrigation.

As for positioning, lean over far to the sink and keep your head down (this is for adults and also for older children). For younger ones, make sure to assist him or her so as not to lean too far over the sink. Make sure you blow strong enough to rinse the entire nasal area but not too hard that you feel as if you are becoming light headed. When you have consumed your desired amount of saline solution, wipe your face with a clean hand towel. This procedure may be repeated in the morning or several times during the day.
